How to choose a road bike size?

Road bike size is one of the most common reasons for unsatisfactory purchases. Height alone is not enough, as two people of the same height may have different inseams, torso lengths, flexibility, and preferred riding positions.

Key Parameters

  • Stack — front frame height. Affects how low your position is.
  • Reach — frame length. Affects how extended your position is.
  • Inseam — helps assess frame and seatpost height.
  • Stem length — can correct position, but won't fix a poorly chosen frame.
  • Handlebar width — affects shoulder comfort and control.

Why isn't a size 54 from one brand equal to a size 54 from another?

Each manufacturer has its own geometry. A Trek 56, Specialized 56, and Cervélo 56 can provide a different position. That's why for premium bikes, it's worth looking at the geometry chart, not just the size sticker.

Symptoms of the wrong size

  • neck or shoulder pain after a short ride,
  • feeling excessively stretched out,
  • too many spacers under the stem,
  • seatpost extended extremely high or low,
  • difficulty with confident bike handling.

How to buy without trying it on?

Ask for the frame geometry, a photo of the saddle setup, stem length, and information about the previous user. If you have your current bike, compare the stack/reach and cockpit setup.
